All told, at least seven Indian Americans made were elected to statehouses in Maryland, Ohio, Vermont, Connecticut and Colorado.
Maryland. Kumar Barve, D-Md., was the top vote-getter in District 17, handily winning with 23 percent of the vote. He will continue to serve as the Majority Leader in the Maryland House of Delegates. Barve, 52, is the chief financial officer of an environmental company.
Barve will be joined this year by fellow Democrats and Indian-Americans, Sam Arora and Aruna Miller. Arora, just 29, prior to getting elected from District 19 with 20,258 votes, was also involved in the presidential campaign of erstwhile Sen. Hillary Clinton, and when she lost in the primary was a volunteer in President Obama’s campaign. Arora works in the family firm which provides health care services to veterans and military personnel.
Aruna Miller won her race to become the District 15 Representative running on a platform that included prioritizing education and transportation. Miller is a transportation engineer.
Ohio. Democrat Jay Goyal was first elected in 2006 as State Representative for the 73rd District in Ohio. He was re-elected in 2008, and became Majority Whip. The election on Nov. 2 has Goyal returning to Columbus fending off a tough challenge in his Republican leaning district, defeating David Nitzsche. Goyal received 17,601 votes or 54 percent of the votes. The second-ranking Democrat in the state House, Goyal said and economic issues will continue to be his top priorities.
Vermont. Kesha Ram was reelected to her second term to the Vermont House of Representatives and remains the nation’s and the state’s youngest legislator. Her campaign consisted mainly of engaging with citizens as she knocked on all of the doors in her district twice. Her platform called for clean environment, access to a quality education from early childhood to adulthood, and inclusive, sustainable, and equitable opportunities for economic growth. Ram won with 41 percent of the vote.
Connecticut. Republican Dr. Prasad Srinivasan won the 31st District of the Connecticut House of Representatives. He will be the only physician there. His campaign focused on healthcare along party lines as well as a pledge to provide a friendlier environment for businesses. Srinivasan is a long time resident of Glastonbury Town and has been practicing in the Town and Hartford area for over 30 years.
Colorado. Janak Joshi, a retired physician, grassroots activist, and resident of Colorado Springs for more than 31 years, is the Republican victor for House District 14 in northern Colorado Springs.
