TRAVEL:
Elegant and Cosmopolitan: Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne, the capital of Australia’s Victoria state, is a stylish, elegant and cosmopolitan city that is riding on the current Australian economic boom. A rich, diverse influx of new immigrants have added a dash of color which the city has enthusiastically embraced. A Siliconeer photo essay.
(Above): Go Desis! Australian authorities have taken to heart the recent misgivings regarding racially charged attacks against Indians. Right in Federation Square, in the heart of Melbourne’s downtown, Indian immigrants to Australia are celebrated in a public photo exhibit put together by the Victorian government’s multicultural commission in association with the Australian federal government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Ever since Federation Square, Melbourne’s landmark cultural and entertainment destination, was opened to the public, Melburnians and visitors have been gathering here. Locals have embraced Fed Square as a true reflection of their city, with rich cultural experiences, a diversity of places to eat and drink, unique shopping and a wealth of information to welcome visitors.

(Above): Nowhere is Australia’s celebration of diversity for evident than its cuisine. Here Turkish matrons serve piping hot gozleme, a delicious fried flatbread with meat or cheese stuffing.

In the background is the Etihad Stadium, the only football stadium in the Southern Hemisphere with a fully retractable roof. Since opening on March 9, 2000, more than 19-million people have passed through the venue’s turnstiles for sporting and entertainment events.
