TAMIL CINEMA:
Romantic Comedy: Kadhal Solla Vandhen

Cast: Balaji Balakrishan, Meghana Raj, Karthik Sabesh
Music: Yuvanshankar Raja
Director: Boopathy Pandian

Director Boopathy Pandian’s Kadhal Solla Vandhen is a love story laced with comedy. The campus story, set in an Arts College in Trichy, revolves around the one-sided love of a first year male student towards a woman in the third year.

Naanu Prabhu (Balaji Balakrishan) meets pretty Sandhya (Meghana Raj) on the first day of college and instantly falls for her without knowing that she is older. He is shocked when he knows she is older and decides to forget her. Circumstances, however, lead him to fall in love with her again. The story takes a dramatic turn when the woman casually tells him to call her his sister.

Prabhu is dejected but he is in no mood to give up. He is adamant in his romantic stand even as the woman is in no mood to encourage this unusual liaison. The woman sympathizes, but she cannot accept his love. The man is ready to go to any length, even killing himself.

Boopathy Pandian has presented a mixture of romance and comedy. The narration is youthful and enjoyable. The first half bubbles with lighthearted comedy. The director may have gone overboard in making us laugh but the overall impact of the comedy is good. The twists and turns, too, are good.

But the director grossly fails in making the climax convincing. The ill-conceived, shocking climax is jarring and incompatible with the overall fun mood of the story.

Balaji Balakrishnan of Kana Kaanum Kaalangal impresses in the role of man anguished by unrequited love. He expresses his attraction towards the woman and the pain of being rejected well. He also scores in the comedy scenes. Meghna Raj looks like Nayantara and handles her role with amazing ease. Overall the woman has made an impact with her looks and attitude. Karthik Sabesh as the friend of the hero is fun.

Yuvanshankar Raja has given a couple of soothing melodies but he goes overboard in the background score. Cameraman Rana has given the entire movie a fresh look.

Kadhal Solla Vandhen is an enjoyable romantic comedy despite a poorly conceived climax.
