In the last two decades, the mafia has helped capture booths for politicians and awarded tickets to stand for elections, and now, criminal elements are financing political campaigns to which can be added the factor of growing corporate financing of elections. Not a single party can claim itself to be free of criminal elements, there exists a strong correlation between a candidate’s criminal and financial status and there has been a marked increase in their wealth at the time of re-contesting of elections.

No matter how much Indians may like to call themselves a contender of a superpower status in the global order, it is not a myth that it will need a slew of reforms at every level and systemic changes to gain a foothold on the tarmac of a truly modern and developed nation.

An ordinance and a related Bill controversial for allowing leeway to convicted lawmakers in terms of contesting electorally and remaining in office have been barred from passage in the Indian Parliament after a whole lot of drama and less of political debate, and more so because of vitriolic public opposition, writes Priyanka Bhardwaj.

Obsessing about Sachin, the master batsman, is not just due to a phenomenal record or the runs he scored. It is about witnessing a maestro at play, live for over a quarter of a century, except perhaps the last year or so when the prodigious batsman struggled. The great man has now come to terms with reduced reflexes due to aging. Even God is entitled to some time off from managing the universe and cricket.

The God of Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, has decided to retire. God’s don’t fade away, they endure. Youtube videos of Sachin taking on Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Shoaib Akhtar, will remain forever, recording millions more hits, writes Siddharth Srivastava.

Director Oliver Hirschbiegel’s movie “DIANA” is an ambitious film, one that might face initial viewer reservations because many in our generation still have vivid memories of the late Lady Diana Spencer. As Princess of Wales or just Lady Di, she was one member of the British Royalty who touched the hearts and minds of millions around the globe as she became Britain’s most glamorous face to the world. Ras H. Siddiqui presents a review.

An icon of Indian music, with a career spanning six decades, legendary singer Manna Dey passed away recently, leaving behind a rich legacy of songs.

Dey performed live concerts in many countries, some here in the Bay Area as well. We happened to be at one of his concerts a few years back. He came with just one other musician on the tabla, while he played the harmonium, and also sang at the same time. The rich husky voice still lingers as we write this tribute, “Zindagi, Kaisi Hai Paheli ...”

Siliconeer wishes all a very happy and prosperous Diwali!
