REMEMBRANCE:
Remembering Ekushey: Honoring Bangla

(Above): Bangladeshis Feb. 21 pay homage to martyrs of its language movement at the central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. The martyrs died fighting to establish Bangla as a state language in erstwhile East Pakistan Feb. 21, 1952.
One of the most important days in the Bangladeshi cultural political calendar, the day is celebrated as Amar Ekushey (immortal 21st). Its importance now transcends political boundaries as on this day every year Bangla-speakers in Bangladesh, West Bengal and elsewhere in the world renew their commitment to preserve and promote the language of Rabindranath Tagore, Michael Madhusudan Datta and Kazi Nazrul Islam.
The United Nations now recognizes February 21 as International Mother Language Day. A Siliconeer photo essay. [PROTHOM ALO photo]
