MUSIC:
Geet Mala: A Tribute to Ameen Sayani

An event that will recreate a bit of the amazing wizardry that the legendary Ameen Sayani brought to us, with his Geet Mala compilations and narratives, is taking place in SF Bay Area later this month, writes Yathish Sarathy.

Ameen Sayani’s mesmerizing voice and clear commentary held the radio-centered world of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The golden era of Hindi film music, from 1952-1977, became ever more accessible and deeply meaningful with the Binaca compilation lighting a path through the prodigious music output of that era.

With stalwarts like Rafi, Lata, Kishore and who’s-who amongst the music directors towering over the landscape, the difficulties of selecting the songs, amidst overwhelming responses from his audience, critics, is brought to life in many of his interviews he has given over the years.

On November 22, we will hear from him again, on a specially taped interview for us, some of the highlights, the trials and tribulations he went through, to help the audience at large sift through the treasure trove of Hindi film-music, just to find those big nuggets, those wonderful melodies, that we take for granted to be always ‘born great,’ seldom pausing to think that the ‘greatness was often thrust upon them,’ by the reputation of being in the Geet Mala selection, forever immortalizing them in our hearts and minds.

The program will feature Jhankaar Live, a popular Bay Area band, famous for their soulful style. The show will be hosted by Sameer Khera, who is a Bay Area legend in his own right, but also has the distinction of being in the Geetmala recording studios and done many interviews with Ameen Sayani.

Intero Real Estate Services and Calcoast Financial are the proud sponsors of this event, looking to both fondly remember the Golden Era, the wizard who shaped the music of that era, as well as support talented local singers. It will be a memorable night of food, music, fond old memories and evergreen sentiments.

While time and tide wait for no one, the music that stirred our souls, will surely outlive us and carry a small piece of us, forever and beyond? So we all hope.

On Friday, Nov. 22, 7 p.m., at Chandni Restaurant in Newark, Calif., we are going and try and recreate a bit of the amazing wizardry that the legendary Ameen Sayani brought to us, with his Geet Mala compilations and narratives.

Come share that hope and joy with us.

Yathish Sarathy is a realtor and investment property specialist at Intero Real Estate. He lives in Fremont, Calif.
