AUTO REVIEW:
Good Gets Better: 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid SEL

Volkswagen knows it has a popular model with the Jetta. It is the manufacturer’s best-selling car, in fact. The Jetta may be hitting a mark with consumers because it offers German engineering at an accessible price, and it gets great gas mileage. Not content to rest on their laurels, however, Volkswagen amps up the package with these 2013 models, writes Sally Miller Wyatt.

Volkswagen totally redesigned the Jetta in 2011, and for 2013 not only does it get a number of technology and interior updates, but a Hybrid model is added to the line-up.

There are more than 10 models within the Jetta line, and consumers can select from three gasoline engines – the 2.0L, the 2.5L and the 2.0L TSI turbo – plus a TDI Clean Diesel that gets 42 miles to the gallon. And now, there is a Hybrid version. The Hybrid model has a starting price point of $24,995, and delivers an eye-popping 45 miles per gallon mileage rating.

No matter what Jetta you select, you’re going to get a car that appears to be on the demure size with a somewhat unassuming appearance. But, don’t let that fool you. There are many good things inside.

The Jetta Hybrid offers the only turbocharged engine and dual clutch transmission in the compact hybrid class and, coupled with Volkswagen’s German-flavored handling and acceleration, you’re going start out on your travels wondering if this car really is a hybrid. Acceleration may offer the slightest bit of hesitation at first, but you’re picking up speed fast after that.

All Jettas have a sleek, aerodynamic look; Hybrid models are only differentiated by the blue-highlighted VW emblem, hybrid badging, and unique wheels and front grille. The SE model is differentiated from the entry-level Hybrid by LED taillights, while the SEL gains 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels. The top-of-the-line SEL Premium receives 17-inch aluminum wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights with distinctive LED daytime running lights, and fog lights.

Behind the wheel you will find a nicely organized dashboard, great visibility to front, sides and rear, and firm seating.

All Jettas have a 104.4 inch wheelbase, so there is a good amount of leg room here, especially for four passengers. While the rear middle position has to share foot room with the center console, an arching roofline doesn’t encroach on headroom.

Safety features onboard our SEL Premium model include Electronic Stability Control, a full complement of air bags, as well as anti-lock brakes, anti-slip regulation, and electronic differential lock, all standard.

The 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is a fun car to drive. It’s performance factor tries to fool you into thinking you’re not driving a hybrid, but that 45 mile per gallon fuel economy rating will remind you every time you pass by a gas station. It has plenty of room for four passengers and is accommodating for five, has a generously sized trunk and a great sound system.

Clearly, the good has gotten better!
