TECHNOLOGY:
India News on the Go: New iPad App

The New Indian Express group is the first Indian newspaper to release iPad app. (Note: Chennai-based New Indian Express is completely distinct from Indian Express and its U.S. edition). A Siliconeer report.

The iPad from Apple has become a runaway favorite, selling by the millions. The New Indian Express group is the first Indian newspaper to release an app for the tablet.

The New Indian Express group has launched an iPad app, becoming the first Indian daily to do so for Apple’s revolutionary tablet computer, according to a press release.

The application was developed by Abhav LLC, of Cambridge, Mass., and Express Network Private Limited, the new media division of The New Indian Express group, and comes close on the heels of the release of its iPhone app.

Tailored to exploit the features of the iPad, the application delivers key content from The New Indian Express and its Web site, expressbuzz.com, into the iPad. Updated automatically several times a day, the app ensures readers have the latest news on India, ranging from national news to regional news focused on the southern states, cricket and movies.

“We developed an app for the world’s most popular phone and we now have one for the most sought after mobile device on the planet,” said Bala Murali Krishna, who heads the New Indian Express group’s New Media initiatives. “Like the iPhone app, we expect the iPad app to extend our reach to the Indian diaspora.”

“The New Indian Express Group seeks to be at the cutting-edge of technology and recognizes the growing demands of its younger readers who want news and much more when on the go,”

“Abhav has built some outstanding iPhone and iPad apps, and we are glad we partnered with them for this project,” said Krishna.

“A few days back we had the first leading newspaper to be available for iPhone and now we are glad to share again with readers in and outside India, that the iPad version New Indian Express HD app is available in iTune stores,” said Shiva Subramanian, President of Abhav LLC

Earlier in July, the New Indian Express group launched its iPhone app, allowing users great choice and flexibility in the way they access and read news.

The app is tailored to deliver key content from The New Indian Express and its web site, expressbuzz.com into the iPhone.

“We expect the specially developed iPhone app to extend our reach to one of the most popular phones on the planet, and to markets outside India,” said Krishna.

The New Indian Express Group, headquartered in Chennai, is the publisher of dailies and magazines including the flagship The New Indian Express. Its subsidiary, Express Network Private Limited, manages its new media properties led by expressbuzz.com, the web site of The New Indian Express, and e-commerce portal, IndiaVarta.com.
